How does a hole in one car work?

Have you ever been to a charity golf tournament and you see that shiny, new beautiful luxury car on the tee box, most likely valued at over $50,000 and ask yourself, how is it possible that I win that if I make a hole in one.  Many people are not sure why the car is out there and why an auto dealer would give away an expensive car if someone makes that shot of a lifetime.

Auto dealers have a marketing budget that includes hole in one insurance, and they like the exposure that a golf tournament gives their dealership and is usually consistent with a demographic that is very attractive to them.

Many have asked, how do I get a hole in one car at my charity tournament…just ask a dealership.  It’s usually not that simple, but its also not that difficult at the same time. The key is to ask a dealership to sponsor or provide a hole in one vehicle that you either have bought a car from recently or one that you have some sort of a relationship with so the ask is not coming out of left field.  Many tournament directors ask dealerships in a geographic area that is near their organization or charity thinking that the dealership may want to win hearts and minds and support a local cause and many times that is a successful route.

Benefits to you

If you do get a dealership to agree to provide a hole in one vehicle, it is a win-win situation for you and them.  Depending on what vehicle and value the dealership provides your event, your cost savings could be anywhere from $500 all the way up to $2,000.  This prize will give you something extra and of substantial value to market to and attract golfers to your tournament. You also do not have to coordinate the prize and logistics as they usually drop the car off at the golf course the day before and pick it up once the event is complete.

Dealership benefits

As mentioned above, the dealership and their vehicle are receiving advertising among a demographic that will most likely benefit them in the future.  Another benefit is that if there is a successful hole in one, they will have an instant sale of a vehicle and a great marketing story.  Depending on the value of the vehicle and your relationship with them, many tournament directors provide the dealership with a complimentary playing spot or foursome within the tournament and I think that is a nice touch as it gets them involved the day of the event and is very likely to get them to agree to provide a vehicle in future years of the event.

Purchase vs. Lease

When auto dealers agree to provide you with a hole in one vehicle, be aware that they have two choices for what they provide you.  The first is a full value prize in which coverage is insured for the entire value of the car and the winner would win the car outright.  This is of course the more desirable prize and also comes with the higher price tag for the dealership. The second option for the dealership is in the form of a two-year lease on the particular vehicle.  This is a much more economical choice for the auto dealer as it usually cuts the cost of the insurance premium in half.  The winner of this prize would win a two-year lease on the vehicle.

A hole in one car has been the most popular prize at a charity golf outing since the late 1980’s when they first started being a popular prize, however things are changing too.  With any prize with a value of up to $1,000,000 being able to be insured, things like cash, trips and jewelry are becoming more and more popular as grand prizes.  They are easier to coordinate as you just need the signage with the prize description on the hole instead of coordinating a car and the logistics that come with that.
